QUESTIONS TYPES

There are four types of questions

MULTIPLE CHOICE
MULTIPLE MATCH
BINARY QUESTIONS
TRUE OR FALSE QUESTIONS

MULTIPLE CHOICE

This is a question with either two sentences, one being a question, or one question sentence. Most are just one long question sentence. A good way to check that you understand the question is to turn it into a statement.

Example:

On a clock, the long clock hand is going up and the short hand is to the right. What is the time?

OR

What is the time when the long clock hand is going up and the short hand to the right?

A. 2pm

B. 3pm

C. 4pm

D. 5pm

Most Multiple Choice Questions are just one long sentence question. A good way to check that you understand the question is to turn it into a statement.

Example:

The time when the long clock hand is going up and the short hand to the right is 3pm.

These questions often have numbers as answers. These are usually in number order (lowest number at top, highest at bottom). Answers B and C,more often C, are usually correct. Dates are also common: 1930, 1940,1950, 1960. Again they are usually in date order and the middle dates (B or C) are most likely to be right.

If the answers are words or phrases, they are sometimes in alphabetical order, sometimes in reverse alphabetical order, or sometimes are laid out so the long answers balance the short answers. It is not so easy to predict which answer is right if they are words and not numbers or dates, but there is still a slight bias towards B and C.

MULTIPLE MATCH

This question type either has two sentences, one being a question, or consists of one question sentence. Most are one sentence. A good way to check that you understand the question is to turn it into a statement..

The difference is that unlike multiple choice questions, TWO of the four answers are right. The word TWO is always spelled out in capital letters to make this clear.

Example:

On a clock, the long clock hand is going up and the short hand is to the right. What TWO times can it show?

OR

What are the TWO times when the long clock hand is going up and the short hand to the right?

A. 03.00

B. 12.00

C. 15.00

D. 21.00

A good way to check that you understand the question is to turn it into a statement.

Example:

The times when the long clock hand is going up and the short hand to the right is are 0300 and 1500.

These questions often have numbers as answers. These are usually in number order (lowest number at top, highest at bottom). Answers B and C,more often C, are usually correct. Dates are also common: 1930, 1940,1950, 1960. Again they are usually in date order and the middle dates (B or C) are more likely to be right.

If the answers are words or phrases, they are sometimes in alphabeticalorder, sometimes in reverse alphabetical order, or sometimes are laid out so the long answers balance the short answers. It is not so easy to predict which answer is right if they are words and not numbers or dates, but there is still a slight bias towards B and C.

BINARY QUESTIONS

These always start with this sentence:

Which of these statements is correct?

Example:

Which of these statements is correct?

A. The time is three o'clock when the big hand goes up and the little hand goes to the right.

B. The time is three o'clock when the big hand goes up and the little hand goes to the left.

The important word is usually at the end - in the example, right and left.

TRUE OR FALSE QUESTIONS

These always start with this sentence.

Is the statement below TRUE or FALSE?

The words TRUE and FALSE are always in capital letters.

The statement is a positive one, without 'not' and so you do not have to say that something is not not true, or false by a double negative. It is very often a statement taken directly from Life in the UK, so if you recognise it, mark it 'true'
