The test is for people aged 18 and over or 65 and under. Under 18s and over 65s are exempt.

The test is not needed by people with certain physical and mental impairments (though the test can be adapted for people who have trouble seeing, hearing or using a computer).

The test is not needed if your English is poor and you can take a 300 hour 'English and citizenship' course followed by an ESOL Skills for Life examination at Entry level 1 or Entry level 2.
